The Managing Director of Sierra Leone Commercial Bank Crispin Bishop Deigh yesterday launched the “Brain of Sierra Leone” competition at the Bank’s Penthouse.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, the Managing Director did not dispute the fact that educational standards in the country are not improving as he stated that the attention of the young have been diverted to something not beneficial to the country and themselves.
Mr. Deigh also stated that when they read the proposal a year ago about the Brain of Sierra Leone competition from Premier Media Consultancy, they realized that it would improve the knowledge of the young. As a result he said Commercial Bank stood ready as the sponsor of the competition.
Mr. Deigh used the opportunity to state that the status of Commercial Bank continues as the market leaders and they are currently undergoing a re-branding and repositioning process. He also disclosed that there were positive indications at the bank which has reflected in the growth of their business, with increased activities in money transfers, increase in the opening of accounts and also the opening of three branches in Port Loko, Waterloo and Njala. Dr. Julius Spencer of Premier Media Consultancy explained the procedures for the competition saying that 16 contestants from each region will join the 32 in the Western Area. From that stage he said they will go in to elimination series where four from each of the regions will join the eight in the Western Area. October 11 will be the start of broadcast of the competition that will last for 17 weeks and it will be broadcast on Premier TOK radio, 98.1, Eastern Radio Kono, Kiss 104 and SLBS Makeni.
The purpose of the competition according to Dr. Julius Spencer is to enhance intellectualism and to inspire people, especially the young to aspire for excellence.
