The Sierra Leone Association of Journalist (SLAJ) Vice President Sheik Bawoh has called on Sports Journalists to report more on local sports in their various newspapers.
He made this statement during the official launching of the SWASAL /Mercury International Annual National Sports Award on Monday 21st November 2011 at Kalleone Group of Companies at Charlotte Street in Freetown.
He said he has observed that there are more of international sports than local sports reported in our local papers.
The SLAJ VP also stated that even a big newspaper like Global Times where he is working as Editor does not report local sports.
Sheik Bawoh also noted that the SWASAL initiative will definitely invigorate sports journalists to write more about local sports.
He also stressed that Sports journalists are not only charged with the responsibility of writing about athletes but also in identifying talents who will later on become heroes and heroines.
He added that by doing so sports journalists could make local sports reporting interesting pointing out that there is a huge audience for local sports and implored SWASAL to continue what it has started adding that SLAJ is highly impressed with the idea to have an annual national sports award.
