The President of the Sierra Leone Mental Health Association Mohamed Juldeh Kanu has stated that his association will ensure that mad people will be taken off the Streets of Freetown before the 50th Independence Anniversary.
He further stated that they have mapped out a strategy to easily remove them off the streets of Freetown and that they are now galvanizing financial and manpower support to ensure efficiency of the operation.
Mr. Kanu said the S/L Mental Health Association was established on the 11th May 2010 and on the 29th December 2010 members walked the length and breadth of Freetown to feed the crazy people and to befriend them.
He further disclosed that the exercise will help government to get an accurate statistics of crazy people in Freetown.
He lamented that a medical survey stated that excessive drug abuse and alcohol use caused madness amongst the youth and that parents and the society should serve as watchdogs to prevent them from drugs and alcohol.
Mr. Kanu also stated that in their drive to achieve this goal, market women and diplomats are going to be included since they are the ones mostly disturbed by mad people.
He asked them to continue to exercise patience until they are removed from the Streets of Freetown. He further stated that his organization intends to establish a trauma centre.
He requested the assistance of government and other nongovernmental organizations so that they can achieve their goal.
