The ongoing national weight lifting competition currently taking place at the Globe Cinema Club at Syke Street in Freetown is expected to produce a total of 6 competent competitors to represent Sierra Leone at the Africa weight lifting competition in Uganda and the international competition in Asia respectively later this year.
Competitors from the northern region of the coutry who are slated to take part in the national competition expressed their burning desires to outsmart other competitors from the other regions so they will form part of national gymnastic team that will represent Sierra Leone at international level.
A competitor from the northern region, Mohamed Silla alias ‘5 star’ stated : “I am highly optimistic that, me and my team mates from the north will triumph at both national and international levels, giving the support received from the London Mining company backed by support from the chairman of the Marampa football team Idrissa Kamara and our personal efforts will put Sierra Leone on the international gymnastic calendar.”
He said government has always placed importance to soccer with nothing to show or write home about.
Abubakar Mansaray alias ‘Tens’ said “my intention is to win both the national and international competitions in Uganda and Asia.” He also stated that, gymnastics has for far too long been relegated to a dust bin in Sierra Leone pointing out that with adequate motivation from government it will be resuscitated and more potential youths will be attracted to it.
Another competitor Alhaji Ibrahim Songowa alias ‘feel strength’ said they will win all the competions at both local and international levels but called on government to support them.
