The Sierra Leone National Cycling Association has over the weekend selected six Cyclists to represent the country in the second edition of the ECOWAS International Cycling Tour, slated for 13-20 February 2012.
The Six Cyclists were selected after an individual time trial from Waterloo to York and back to Waterloo at an estimated finishing time of 2 hours, 20 mintes.
At the end of the trial, Moses Sesay clocked the best time of 1hour, 15 minutes 54 seconds followed by Suleiman Bah with a time of 1hour 56 minutes 15 seconds.
The rest of the results were as follows: Augustine Sesay who came third recorded a time of 1hour 57 seconds 28 minutes, Mohamed Thorlley, fourth clocked 1 hour 58 minutes 50 seconds, Anthony M. Bangura, fifth with 2hours 30 seconds and in the sixth position went to Mohamed M. Barrie with a time of 2hours 1 minute and 1 second.
The President of the Association, Winston D.C. Crowther said the finalists were selected on merit as demonstrated by their efforts at the time trials.
President Crowther disclosed that the cycling tour is organized by the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSCD) and will bring together National Cyclists from ECOWAS member states. The tour he noted, aims to foster the ECOWAS principles on free movement of goods and persons and regional integration efforts.
He also revealed that each country is expected to be represented by an eleven-man delegation with EYSCD providing air tickets for four (4) Cyclists and two coaches; while the member states are expected to provide for the rest of the delegation. Full hotel accommodations and local transportations delegations of all participating delegations, assistance with logistics at the various stages of the race would be provided by the organizers.
The tour is expected to cover the following circuit stages: Stage I, Lagos to Cotonou, stage II, Ouidah (Benin) to Lome (Togo), stage III, Ada to Accra (Ghana) and the final stage is from Aboisso to Abidjan (all in Cote d’Ivoire). The Sierra Leone delegation is expected to depart on the 12th February 2012.
