Casual workers at the Sierra Leone Ports Authority yesterday staged a sit down strike for poor conditions service.
The aggrieved workers stated that they have been working at the ports for a long period of time but they have not been employed as permanent staff of the entity.
They accused Ports Management of employing permanent staff upon orders from the above within the past one year and they also disclosed that Ports management employed over 100 staff on a permanent basis.
The dock workers also accused management of under payment and that their salaries are not paid on paying slip but that they have been collecting their salaries on voucher paper.
According to the dock workers management used the voucher method to complicate the payment because of the high level of illiteracy among the causal workers.
They also lamented that their Transport allowance of Le 2,000.00 per day was slashed to Le 1000.00 by management and there was no proper explanation to the workers as to why their monies was reduced.
Dock workers at the Sierra Leone Ports Authority are calling on the Anti –Corruption Commission to cross check the payment voucher list as against permanent staff and casual workers.
They also disclosed that there is a syndicate on recycling of petty cash on weekly basis by senior staff members unchecked. They also called on the Board of Directors for their immediate intervention.
Dock workers also raised serious concern over the privatization process because there is tendency of manipulations and fear that they will not be entitled to retirement benefits. Ports management could not be reached for their comments.
