Sierrra Leone News: Northern region wins Quranic Memorization Competition

Abu Bakarr Jalloh from the Northern region of Sierra Leone emerged as the winner of the fifth National Quranic Memorization Competition on Sunday 27 May 2018 at the Fourah Bay College Amphitheater. The event was organized by the Foundation of Islamic Information Sierra Leone Limited (FOISIL). Abu Bakarr won Le10 million for reciting the whole Quran and will represent Sierra Leone in the World Quranic competition in Dubai next year. The Amphitheater was filled to it capacity, as hundreds of spectators, were in attendance, to listen to the melodiously voices of the young Sierra Leoneans Quranic reciters. Three categories of reciters took part in the competition, those who memorized the whole Quran, those who memorized two-third and those, who memorized one-third of the holy book. The winner of the competition, Jalloh, said, “I have been preparing for this competition and was determined to be the victor. I want to thank Allah for making it possible that I have emerged as winner.” Ishmael Abu Bakarr Jalloh, from the western area, emerged as victor of the two-thirds competition. For those competing in the one-third category, Mohamed Salieu Kamara, from the western area, came first. The Director of FOISIL, Abdul Latif Kargbo, said, “The competition has aroused the interest of Muslims in the Quran.” He noted that the momentum of the competition is increasing every year. The guest of honour, Sheik Mohamed Saad Normani, from Madina, Saudi Arabia credited the organizer. He described the event as the best of worship in the holy month of Ramadan and encouraged Muslims to be reading the Islamic holy book. The Vice President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh said the occasion symbolises the importance of Quranic knowledge. According to Sheik Farouk Bah, the participants were screened before being sent into the final stage of the competition. He noted that those who took part in the final stage of the competition are the best from each region. The memorization competition started in 2013 to give opportunities to young Sierra Leoneans.
