According to a survey conducted by Awoko Newspaper on mobile telecommunications, it was revealed that Sierratel has the worst network in the country, hostility still going on between Africell and Comium and the three GSM networks charges are still expensive.
According to the survey 72% of Sierratel subscribers said they are always finding it very difficult to recharge their CDMA phones because the recharge centers are very limited.
A woman who lives at Circular Road said the nearest point she gets recharge card is 95 Campbell Street or Siaka Stevens Street by Odeon. “The first day I bought the phone I went to the Rokel Street office and I was told they don’t sell, I then went to the office at Parade, it was the same thing and I was advised to go to Siaka Stevens Street or Campbell Street.
Another 57% said the mobile phones are not good as most of the ones they bought are not working now. They accused Sierratel of selling very cheap phones that does not fit into our climate and are not manufactured well. And they are now confirming that any product from China is substandard.
More than 90% of the subscribers think Sierratel has the cheapest tariff and should be able to go countrywide but getting the recharge where they think other mobile companies are making their money from is hard to get then they are wondering whether Sierratel is in business.
They are appealing to Sierratel to make sure they have more centers and quality phones to sell to the public as they will definitely be able to top the market.
On the land line, the survey conducted was embarrassing to the company as some subscribers said that their phones are now furniture whilst others say their phones are working but they can’t tell the last time they received a telephone bill.
The survey also proved that the public does not trust the company and they believe it has the worst management as nothing seems to be working properly in the once viable and enviable company in the country.
Also some people believe Sierratel should have been the first mobile company in the country if they had the management the other mobile companies are boasting off.
Most of them believe the company is not making profit and the government should privatize it before it will end up as Sierra National Airlines (SNA).
In another survey conducted on the workers of Sierratel, about 60 of them across the country were interviewed and the unanimous cry was the company has the worst management this country has ever seen.
Majority of them said the company just exists only because of the gateway fees paid to them or else they would have gone busted long ago.
They also complained that all the basic facilities accorded them has vanished and they just barely live on their mere salaries.
The workers Awoko spoke to in the Provinces said they have no work to do as land line telephones are not working, the people in the provinces do not trust Sierratel’s mobile phones and it is also difficult to recharge, so most of them spend most of the time just sitting in the office conversing and then go home.
Other workers are blaming the previous government who should have turned Sierratel around but they failed woefully and today the company is in the worst state.
According to them the current Managing Director Alpha Sesay has since retired but is being given yearly contract as if there is nobody competent to run the company.
Most of them appealed to the Minister of Information and Communications to think deeply of Sierratel and put modalities in place to turn the company round as workers that are retiring does not receive benefits and sick workers do not have medical care .
They also said the company at one time was embarking on redundancy, but the number of workers recruited over the past months have surpassed the number they redundant.
Some of them said they are now old and cannot work in any other establishment and they have a short time in the company, but their worry now is when they retire will they receive their benefits?
