The Egyptian Ambassador to Sierra Leone H.E. Gamal Tawfik has assured Sierra ierra Leonean students studying in Egypt are “completely safe.” This was in response to an article carried in our Tuesday edition where the NDA member was expressing concern over the welfare of Sierra Leoneans in Egypt during the massive demonstrations going on. Speaking to Awoko H.E Tawfik said that the vast majority of the students are “studying in the north west of the country” which is very far away from where the demonstrations are taking place in Cairo. He said that the students “are in good shape and they are secure” adding that they “can even talk to their country” meaning they can freely communicate with their relatives here at home.
The Egyptian envoy assured that the “demonstrations are peaceful” and “the country itself is peaceful,” and “people have resumed their work normally.”
Reiterating that things are coming back to normal and the demonstrations have been very peaceful, the envoy said that the Egyptian government is aware of its responsibility and is monitoring the situation of foreign students to make doubly sure that they are safe and secure wherever they are.
