Premier League club Gem Stars FC of Tongo Eastern Sierra Leone has been sold for Le40m Forty-Million Leones to the proprietor of both Division one and two teams Belvic United and Nottingham Forest FC, Victor Lewis.
Gem Stars FC Board of Trustees Chairman Francis Konowa told Awoko that the decision to float the team on the market was because of lack of sponsorship.
Francis Konowa said his constituents of Lower Bambara Chiefdom consider Gem Stars FC a liability.
He said after several meetings with community stakeholders it came out clear that Gem Stars FC since its establishment few years ago is yet to yield any positive dividend, therefore, instead of wasting money on the team, such monies should be used for other developmental purposes like education.
Francis Konowa said the team could not even compete in the ongoing Premier League and FA Cup competition noting further instead of waiting for the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) to sanction or ban the team, it was necessary to sell it .
He said people of Tongo are no longer interested in football.
Victor Lewis has confirmed the buying over of Gem Stars FC.
“The whole process of me buying over Gem Stars FC will be completed by 7th June 2014,” said Victor Lewis.
He said some of the clauses agreed in the sell-out include Gem Stars’ participation in the ongoing local premier league.
Victor Lewis denied the deal was done between himself and Francis Konowa with the knowledge of the majority of the residents of Lowa Bambara Chiefdom, Kenema District.
“Documents about the deal now with the SLFA have the signatories of Konowa, team’s chairman Nanni Tonkara and Secretary General Yayah Sam. Victor Lewis claimed.
