Sierra Leone Sports: Teachers to host inter-school handball competition

Physical Health Education teachers in Kenema will be hosting the maiden edition of the handball at school championship from Friday 23 to Saturday 24 February 2018. Coach Elongima Joseph Amara is one of the leading teachers in the organizing committee set for the running of the championship, which will be played by selected primary and secondary schools in the district. Holy Rosary, Ansarule Islamic, Every Nation Academy, Holy Trinity, Government and Ammadiya Muslim Secondary School will be competing in the secondary school level, whiles College Practicing, Ansarule primary and SLMB will be up against each other in the inter primary school level. The schools with mix gender will produce two teams each (boys and girls). Elongima said that they’ve put all modalities in place for the smooth running of the two-day event, and the Ansarule Handball court has been properly prepared to host the games. He pointed out that has they’ve done all in their powers with support from the Sierra Leone Handball Association ensuring the competition ends successfully. To inspire the young players, a regional friendly match will be played between the Kenema men’s handball team and the giant of Western Area, Lion Mountain Handball Club, who happens to be the current champions of the national Kargbo Hope trophy on Friday before the official opening of the inter school competition. The reason for hosting the friendly is to test the strength of the home team as against the national champions and to as well give the young players the opportunity to see how the game is played in a competitive manner. Meanwhile, the schools have been engaging in effective training to prepare ahead of the duel which will be used as a trial to select the best players that will be representing the district in proposed inter school national championship. Having gone through training over the past days, the boys and girls are very eager to face themselves in the court. The Ansarule Islamic School is the favourite to win the competition, based on the fact that the only facility available to play handball in Kenema is situated at their school compound. But the other schools are optimistic of winning the trophy regardless of the support expected from the pupils of the host, which they said doesn’t mean anything because they too will be matching with focus and determination.
