Sierra Leone Swimming and Water Polo Association will organize an 8-day clinic, slated for June 25th –July 2nd at the Presidential lounge and the swimming pool. The Technical Director, Victor Carew, said we are looking forward to such clinics that will make the association to grow both locally and internationally.
He said the expert from South Africa is Brad Rowe who started his water polo playing and coaching career when he attended Westville Boys High School. From then on he was part of the Durban High School Coaches that led to DHS’s unrivaled Durban and District swimming and water polo teams’ success. His ten years at Clifton has seen Clifton reap the rewards as one the best water polo playing schools in the country from the youth players all the way up to the seniors.
Rowe’s players praise his coaching ability and his players often almost always go the extra mile to do their best to make him proud. His success stems from the passion he has for the sport, his mentality of hard work, consistency, and perfection.
The Secretary General of the Association, Mohamed Turay, said 30 participants will take part in the clinic.
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in the water between two teams. The game consists of four quarters, usually of eight minutes, in which the two teams attempt to score goals and throw the ball into their opponent’s goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Except for the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. Water polo is typically played in an all-deep pool seven feet (or two meters) deep.
Special equipment for water polo includes a ball, which floats on the water, numbered and coloured caps and two goals, which either float in the water or are attached to the side of the pool.
The game is thought to have originated in Scotland in the late 19th century as a sort of “water rugby”. William Wilson is thought to have developed the game during a similar period. The game thus developed with the formation of the London Water Polo League and has since expanded, becoming widely popular in various places around the world, including Europe, the United States, Brazil, China, Canada and Australia.
Turay also revealed that during the clinic most of the Physical Health Education Teachers and coaches who they have trained before will be the participants and at the end they are going to take exam and those who pass will receive FINA licenses.
And the 8 days the three days will be for lecture and showing water polo games and the rest days we are going to use for practical which will be done in the pool.
Turay stated that the good thing is after the clinic the expert from South Africa will assist them to select the best water polo players who will start training as they are planning to have water polo league. Presently they have teams who are ready like Banana Water, Susan Bay and host of other teams.
The Financial Secretary of the Association, Philip M. Bangura, said the clinic will cost Le18 million, which will be provided by the association they after the association should have send the report and the financial report with receipt the international body FINA which refund the money back to the association.
