
Youth Affairs Commissioner, Anthony Koroma, said sports is the major medium for promoting peace, social cohesion, entertainment and livelihood. “The most important development within this initiative is the enhancement of school base sporting activities and the articulation to national and international sports, “he said.
He made this statement during the national sports development conference. He also stated that the repositioning of sport for sustainable development is timely and extremely relevant within the current context of development in Sierra Leone.
Koroma stated that the repositioning of sport is in conformity with the global trend of addressing sport from a youth development perspective and consistent with the President’s agenda for youth development in Sierra Leone.
“This perspective and initiative is also articulated in the United Nations and the Commonwealth sports for development and peace protocols for which Sierra Leone is a signatory”.
Commission Koroma called on all the delegates to put the interest of athletes first as the most important in sport. Stating they must be reminded that in all that they do in the conference will only yield one outcome, which is to produce healthy, active, productive and competitive athletes for the country.
Koroma appealed to the stakeholders to embrace the initiative because according to him it is meant to solve all the problems, all the squabbles that they’ve been experiencing in the sport sector.
The Commissioner admonished the athletes to use this opportunity to develop themselves and make Sierra Leone proud. “We have the talent, that is why we are developing the instrument to polish those talents,
Many of the athletes at the Siaka Steven Stadium said they were looking forward to bringing peace in the associations. Athletes are the ones who suffer when there is confusion in the associations.
