As part of their developmental plans, the newly elected executive of the Sierra Leone Handball Association (SLHA) paid courtesy call on the Ministry of Sport on Thursday 23rd June 2016.
The reason for visiting the Ministry according to the Public Relation Officer of the association, Femie Cole was to introduce their new executive to the Ministry as well as to table some of the major challenges they are faced with.
Cole said the some of the challenges they mentioned at the meeting include the lack of playing floor.
“We informed the Ministry about the playing floor we received from our international federation few years ago. We told them that that the floor is for indoor court and we cannot place it on the current playing area we’ve paved at the Siaka Steven Stadium without a proper indoor court construction.
He said they made it clear to them that the hopes of the association is to construct a modern indoor court which other sporting disciplines will also benefit from in future. But the association is going through series of challenges and the major one is lack of sponsorship or funds for the construction of the court.
They also officially put forward proposal for support from the Ministry for both the male and female national teams that the association is currently preparing to compete in the upcoming International Handball Federation (IHF) Africa Zone-2 championship scheduled to take place in Guinea next month.
“We are very pleased with the outcome of the meeting. It was timely, important and very successful. We hope they will look into what we discussed and assist us to develop and promote the sport nationwide,” Cole concluded.
