The Freetown Golf Club is preparing for this year’s Sierra Leone Open Golf Championship over the 23-26 November 2017. Some 35 professionals, including defending champion from Ghana, Vincent Torgah, 2013 winner – another Ghanaian, Emos Koblah, and Sierra Leone’s ace professional golfer, James Lebbie, based in the United States. The players will be vying for an enviable trophy, cash rewards and other prizes. Lebbie expressed delight to be back at the Freetown Golf club where he last won the tournament in 1990. He maintained that he flew in early to practice at the course after a long absence. He noted the competition will be very tough, with world class opponents from all over Africa. Lebbie paid tribute to Club President Yadah Williams, Captain Arne Johansen, the Club Executive, sponsors and colleagues.
Another professional, home-based golfer, Momodu Kargbo, noted that they are determined this time round to ensure the competition is won by a Sierra Leonean golfer. He observed that some of their colleagues have been competing away from home in other West African tournaments to sharpen their skills and techniques.
The five day tournament gets underway on Wednesday with the PRO-AM competition, which will be followed on Thursday by the Professional Stroke Play. Competitions for Ex-caddies, senior and junior caddies were played earlier as a prelude to the Championship proper.
