Joseph James, 10 and Muvaah James, 7 made their debut shot at age four and since that maiden strike the lushly green Freetown golf course has been their second home.
On Sunday at the Sierra Leone 2017 golf opening championship the James’ were amongst the youngest amateur golfers that carted away trophies in their respective age categories.
Joseph said he felt absolutely “fantastic” being awarded yet with another trophy. “This is my seventh trophy since I started playing at age four. The first trophy I won was in the 2013 golf opening championship at the Freetown golf course.” Notwithstanding, he said, “I’m really glad collecting my seventh trophy.”
Joseph noted that even though soccer is predominant in Sierra Leone and “I love soccer” there are limited opportunities for those with talent since scouters hardly come in country to search for them, however is my second option and I am loving it, he explained.
Looking at his future in golf, he said, “in the next five to ten years, I hope to be bagging more trophies… like Tiger Woods”
As for Muvaah, this is his first trophy, unlike his elder brother Joseph who is aspiring to become a professional golfer as the likes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and many more, Muvaah said “I’m just playing for fun… I actually want to play soccer.” I’m an Arsenal fan and Alexis Sanchez. ”
Mother of the golfers, Asaama James celebrated broadcaster and Station Manager of Radio Democracy expressed her delight and assured supporting her sons’ golfing passion to the highest heights.
The President of the Freetown Golf Club Yada Williams said, in this year’s championship “the group that gave me the greatest satisfaction are the young golfers.” “Some of these armatures are more capable than our professionals,” he averred.
Mr. Williams also congrats the parents of young golfers for providing the resources in ensuring that their kids continue to grow interest in the sport.
He also called on cooperate institutions to support local golfers. “There are no fix sponsors for local golfers,” he said. Further noting that one of the international golfers that took part in the opening have six sponsors…”
16 professionals and 4 armatures from 8 different countries competed for this year’s $25,000 cumulative prize.
