The Leone Stars traveled to Liberia to play a friendly match with the Liberian Lone Stars as part of the celebrations marking Liberia’s independence on Sunday 22 July 2018. The game ended 0 – 0, after 90-minutes… to the disappointment of fans and Presidents.
The Liberian squad were cheered on by their President, who was a prized African footballer, George Weah. The Salone Stars were motivated by the visit of President Bio to their training camp prior to the game.
Mohamed Konneh, a Sports Writers Association journalist who was part of the Sierra Leone delegation, said, “Both teams played an exciting match but they failed to score goals.” He said the team was well received in Monrovia and a celebratory mood was in the air with the Liberian flag flying at every corner.
Prior to the game, the Head Coach of the National team, John Keister, said they were not going to take the match lightly. This match is also a test case for the boys as we prepare for our qualifying fixtures in two months’ time”, he said.
The players seemed to enjoy the friendly match and obviously want to play more matches before a game in Ethiopia in September.
Football fans were thrilled to hear play-by-play commentary brought to them by the Sports Writers Association on Mercury Radio.
