Sierra Leone records first COVID-19 death a year ago with 61 cases nationwide

Sierra Leone: A year ago, Sierra Leone on 22nd April 2020 recorded its first COVID-19 death, 22 days after the government confirmed the country’s index COVID-19 cases on 31st March 2020, believed to be a traveller from Europe. At that time a year ago, the country had only 61 confirmed cases including 43 in Western Area Urban district, 8 in Western Are Rural, 6 in Port Loko district, 3 in Kenema in the East, and one in Tonkolili in the North.

One year forward, in 2021, the cumulative cases have reached 4,042 and still counting, indicating that Sierra Leone in the last year recorded 3,981 new cases, according to national numbers from the National COVID-19 Emergency Response Centre (NaCOVERC) for confirmed cases as of yesterday 21st April 2021.

A year ago, the number of persons that were reported to have recovered from the virus was 6 back in 2020, while in April 2021, there are 2,883 persons. They happened exactly two days after President Julius Maada Bio and his family had gone into self-quarantine after one of his bodyguards had tested positive for COVID-19.

However, the COVID-19 picture for yesterday Wednesday 21st April 2021 indicated that the country recorded one new case making the total cumulative confirmed cases to 4,042 (1,681 female, and 2,361 male), with 79 deaths, and 2, 883 recovered persons.

Despite the increase in numbers for new cases, deaths and recoveries, Western Area Urban has so far recorded 2,319 cases, Western Area Rural 540 cases, Tonkolili 85 cases, Pujehun 38 cases, Port Loko 125 cases, Moyamba 68 cases, Koinadugu 41 cases, Kenema 133 cases, Kono 84 cases, Karene 11 cases, Kambia 32 cases, Kailahun 97 cases, Falaba 11 cases, Bombali 58 cases, Bonthe 100 cases and Bo 129 cases.

These numbers have indicated: Southern Region has recorded 335 cases or 8.29 per cent of all recorded cases, the Eastern Region – 314 cases (7.77%) the Northern Region 363, (8.98%) of national cumulative cases, while inbound passengers account for 171 cases or 4.23%.
