The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) on Thursday, 23rd June, 2016 organized a one-day orientation program at Javouhey House, Leicester Peak Road, Freetown, for their newly elected Executive that will run the affairs of the Association till 2019.
The retreat, with the theme “Smooth Transition- Knowing your Roles and Responsibilities”, deliberated on three key objectives: the organogram of SLAJ to avoid conflicting roles, clear roles and responsibilities for each Executive member in line with the Companies Act and the Association’s M&A and information on basic financial best practices and internal control systems to ensure transparency and accountability.
“At the end of the day the new Executive is expected to have a clear road map of where they want to go and what they want to achieve in the next three years,” said lead facilitator, Dr. Victor Massaquoi.
The program also included the formal handing over of documents and equipments from the past executive to their new colleagues. However, only the out-gone Secretary General and his deputy attended the program and shared their experiences working at the Secretariat for the last three years before formally handing over their laptop computers and relevant documents. The laptop computer from the outgone Organising Secretary, was handed over to the new Organising Secretary on her behalf by the Financial Secretary.
SLAJ President, Kelvin Lewis said, “this orientation program has given us an opportunity to see clearly now where we want to go and how we can now transform our Association into a well structured and efficiently run organization. We have to make significant changes to our operations and begin to put in the building blocks for a better SLAJ. It is now our duty to work together as a unified team to make SLAJ better.”
Dr. Julius Spencer, Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq, Joshua Nicol and Olufemi Johnson of Freetown Nominees also presented papers dealing with Board relations, roles as assigned by the SLAJ Constitution and Companies Act, group dynamics and building a structured financial system.
