As the strike action continues at the national polytechnic and teacher training colleges for demand in the payment of salaries, the Public Relations Officer of the association, Joseph Max-Gorvie has yesterday revealed that they have turned down the plea made by the government to call-off the strike.
Highlighting the outcome of the consultative meeting with the education and the finance ministries, Mr Max-Gorvie said the executives of the association were furnished with a document purportedly attesting the payments of salaries and backlogs in first week next month and an interactive appeal to commence lectures until payments are made.
In his statement, Mr Max- Gorvie further told Awoko that the said document, which was later on taken to all the members of the association, was rejected. He added that the government over the past years have made similar promises in which it was never fulfilled.
“The executive decided to take back the document to its members because they are the ones that gave us mandate for the strike action and in all the institutions, members have turned down that plea, … that is to call off the strike and the monies being paid in July. They are saying No because they have been giving series of promises in the past in which it wasn’t fulfilled. They are saying until the monies are paid before they cut off the strike” Mr Max Gorvie added.
Lamenting on the unnecessary delay in the implementation of the 2016-2018 conditions of service for senior supporting staff in polytechnics and teacher training colleges in Sierra Leone, which provoked the strike action on 20th May, 2016, Mr Max Gorvie re-echoed the strong vow by his association to continue the strike action until their issues are adequately addressed.
