The Produce Monitoring Board (PMB) has pegged the price of cocoa for the 2016/2017 crop season at Le12,000 per kilo. This represents a 25 percent increase from Le9,000 in 2015/2016 crop season. The price of coffee is Le7,000 per kilo this crop season from Le6,000 last season.
“The price of Le12,000/kilo is for grade 1 cocoa bean with a total defect of less than 10% and moisture content of 7.5%. The price of Le7,000/kilo is for FAQ coffee beans free from stones, sticks and black beans,” according to the release.
PMB is the regulator of prices for agricultural produce including ginger, oil palm etc. The volume of cocoa produced in 2014/15 is estimated at 13,253 tonnes from 13,864 tonnes the year before. Despite Ebola, cocoa production in 2015/2016 is estimated at 15,500 tonnes.
The cocoa and coffee crop seasons start in September and ends in August the following year.
