Sierra Leone News:PLAN Launch Assessment Report

PLAN Sierra Leone last Friday launched an Assessment report on the effect of Ebola on Children, Families and Communities at their office on Cantonment road. While launching the report the Country Director of PLAN Sierra Leone Casely Coleman said that as a child centred community organization, PLAN has to show accountability to their donors, partners, government and the communities they engage with. He went further to say that this launch is to transparently share the outcome of this study conducted between September and October this year in all program areas where they operate i.e Western Area, Bombali, Port Loko, Moyamba and Kailahun. He expressed appreciation to all the partners who have made this assessment possible. The Country Director added that they will be sharing this presentation in line with PLAN’s policy which requires accountability as they have to share the outcome of the report to their partners the children families and communities the government agencies that they work with, also they are going to N’jala university to make sure that this research goes as wide as possible and meet certain academic standards like the methodology that was used. In presenting the report Samuel Byrne who is the Monitoring, Evaluation and Research Manager of PLAN said that the report was done at the time when the stakes were high and the overall object of the report was to generate and establish information about the Ebola Virus Disease situation and its effect on children and families and communities. In highlighting some of the key findings Samuel Bryne said that the assessment confirms that people with disabilities are losing out on the messaging and actual delivery of service because of their condition. Also there is discrimination and stigmatization of survivors, orphans and people with disabilities. He said there is need for sustained leadership at the level of government, development partners and at the community level in a coordinated manner to help fight this disease. The research also confirms their policy that sustained engagement and partnership with policy makers and communities is key towards stopping the epidemic. By Nancy Koroma Tuesday December 23, 2014
