The Chairman of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Energy, Hon. Munuku Sulaiman on Wednesday ordered that the Minister of Energy, Ambassador Henry Macauley should re-install all PEC smart meters removed recently from homes and business houses in the Western Area.
With a firm voice, Hon. Munuku said after a closed door meeting with members of the Committee, it was agreed that Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) should with immediate effect reinstate all PEC Smart Meters until the matter before Parliament is amicably resolved.
He also ordered that the Minister of Energy should not enter in to any new contract with any foreign company and advertised that the EDSA Board should within two weeks call both parties to a meeting to resolve the matter and report to parliament.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Energy furthered that there should be no political interference from the Ministry and that the Board should be allowed to operate independently and EDSA should submit a list of Customers with PEC’s smart meters showing the amount of monies collected for the past three months.
It came as a surprise on Thursday, when Hon. Munuku changed his firm decision and stated “based upon new and relevant information, hereby rescinds decisions made in the meeting with EDSA and its Interim Board, the Ministry of Energy and PEC S/L Ltd. on Wednesday 9th November, 2016 and states unequivocally that EDSA’s position should be upheld”.
The “new and relevant information” was not disclosed.
