Sierra Leone News:Figures on Measles have dropped-Director of Disease Prevention

The Director of Disease Prevention and Control, Dr Foday Dafae has confirmed that there is no longer an outbreak of measles, and the public need not fear. He made this statement as a result of rumours from within and outside the Country that measles is still on the increase. Dr Dafae stated that sometime in January this year there was an increase in cases, which did not only affect children but adults inclusive, and this prompted the Ministry to organise a nationwide campaign. He furthered that the campaign indeed yielded results, noting that both children and adults were targeted, including children who had received vaccination for measles were revaccinated. The Director of Disease Prevention added that yellow fever and measles are airborne and communicable, but are preventable diseases. Dr Dafae said the campaign was to also raise the awareness among the public to be conscious to take their children and wards, as routine vaccination is on-going in all health facilities around the Country. He said the public should keep calm and adhere to all health education advice, especially during the rains when outbreak of water and airborne diseases are imminent. The Ministry he said is in preparedness in the event of any outbreak, noting that surveillance officers in the various districts are on routine surveillance, up to border areas.
