On the night of 3 April 2017, at Moiba in the eastern part of Freetown, a woman named Yealie Sama allegedly killed her husband Alhaji Mustapha Sama. She was arrested and charged with Murder contrary to the Offences against a Person’s Act.
Sama made her second appearance before Justice Monfred Sesay at the Siaka Stevens Street High Court in Freetown on Wednesday 20 June 2018. There the State Prosecutor J.A.K. Sesay led three witnesses in evidence against her.
One of the witnesses, Minkailu Sesay, a driver and tenant to the deceased, identified the accused as the wife of the deceased. He then told the court that he was lying down in his room that night when he heard the voice of the deceased shouting. He said being that it was dark. He decided to use his phone’s light.
The witness said the door to the entrance of the deceased apartment as open and he saw the accused naked; she was using the curtain to wipe blood from her hand. The witness went on to say he saw two knives in the deceased room and blood traces from inside the room coming out. Sesay further explained that he followed the trail of blood until he came to where the deceased was lying naked.
He further explained that he requested for someone to accompany him to the police station where he reported the matter.
The police took away the corpse and the accused. He was later asked to make statement at the police. The witness, during his testimony, identified two knives found at the scene of crime. He also identified a blood stained curtain that was hung on the door, which she allegedly used to wipe the blood off her hand.
Another witness who testified in court was Mohamed Koroma, another tenant. He also identified one of the knives discovered at the scene of crime as well as the blood stained curtain.
The police investigator, who was the third witness was about to tender the statement of the accused, when the defence counsel, Philip I. Mamie objected to the statement being tendered as exhibit. The Counsel said his client did not make the said statement voluntarily. He said she was told to make the statement and get bail from police cell or refuse to do so and stay in the cell endlessly.
The matter was adjourned in order to grant the Counsel opportunity to furnish the court with legal provisions for his objection.
Yealie Sama was not granted bail. She is still on remand at the Correctional Centre in Freetown. The matter was adjourned to 27 June 2018.
