The Chair of the Western Area Rural District Council (WARDC) Kasho J. Holland-Cole said the Council has set its sights on flood prevention and mitigation actions.
Waterloo is an area that has for the past eight years consistently been prone to flooding during the rainy season. The poor construction of buildings, the clogging of drainages and the lack of proper environmental management mechanisms has contributed to this trend in the affected area. This situation always imposes serious hardship and distress on residents.
Determined to avoid a repeat of such ugly developments, the Council has facilitated the cleaning of the major drainages and some areas around the affected communities.
The Chair, during a flood mitigation sensitization campaign and cleaning exercise, told residents that Council cares about their lives and would therefore not allow them to continue risking their lives by staying in flood-prone areas. He stated that Council will soon embark on the demolition of homes, businesses and other structures in the area.
The Chair stressed the need for residents and the affected people to cooperate with his administration to reduce risks in the district especially as the country prepares for heavy rains in the coming months.
