The remains of the oil magnate, Vincent Lamin Kanu, will be taken to Makeni today and burial is tomorrow, February 5. His homeward journey began yesterday with a civic funeral at the Miatta Conference Hall Youyi Building in Freetown.
Until his death on January 11 in London, the Late Dr. Vincent Lamin Kanu was Chairman, Board of Directors, Leonoil Company Ltd; former Managing Director National Petroleum (NP); former Dean of the Diplomatic Corp and former Country Manager, AGIP.
He was born in 1943 in Makarie village, two miles to Makeni in the Bombali District and attended the St. Francis Secondary School, Makeni. He received post-secondary school education at the Institute of Business in Rome, Italy and at Boston College in Massachusetts in the USA, majoring on Business and Management.
Vincent or Vinco as his friends fondly called him began his career as a Sales Representative for AGIP, an Italian petroleum company. From then, he developed interest in the petroleum industry. He rose to the position of Country Manager of AGIP. He served the British Petroleum (BP) Sierra Leone and later became Managing Director of NP until he retired in 2005.
From 1990 to 2002 he acted as Consul for Italy in Sierra Leone and served as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps.
For his role in the field of commerce and the oil industry, President Koroma honoured him in 2007 as Grand Officer of the Order of the Rokel. After his retirement in 2005 as Managing Director of NP he built the prestigious Wusum Hotel in Makeni, his home town. His remains will be buried within the compound of the Hotel tomorrow.
