The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, through the Minister of State; Momodu Kargbo yesterday presented two grants agreements in the House of Parliament both of whom were technical and capacity assistance, among which was a USD 673, 000 grant meant to boost the Energy Ministry and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) projects in the country.
Being an African Development Bank grant, the amount will be used to promote technical assistance and capacity building at the Ministry and the MCC Secretariat.
The Minister of State explained that part of the money will be used for the setting up of an Energy Planning Unit at the Ministry of Energy which has never existed despite the importance of energy in every development aspect.
He observed that the long absence of the Unit can simply attest to the fact that there has never been any proper planning for the future of energy distribution in the country.
He maintained therefore that the unit will set the pace as it will be given an organogram and proper personnel to carry on its operation.
With this, he said, they can now look and plan the energy distribution sector as demands for energy keep increasing every day.
The Minister of State said that development in the energy sector is one of the key parameters for qualification for the MCC award which is why part of the money will be used to enhance the MCC Secretariat in promoting technical undertakings required for the MCC, one of which is capacitating the energy as well as water sectors.
During discussions in the Well of Parliament, Members suggested that implement partners of this viable project, which include, the Ministry of Energy and the MCC should go and talk to them on plans put in place to actualize the aspirations of the project.
