As the Bank of Sierra Leone launched the regulations guiding Mobile Money Financial Services on Tuesday 17th November, the United Bank of Africa (UBA) yesterday had an interactive session with customers to discuss the importance of digital banking and the products it is currently offering. The interactive session took place at The Hub Hotel in Wilberforce, bringing together various classes of customers.
The face of banking has changed with customers going digital with UBA banking products, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ndubuisi Ejiofor said during the session. With these products, you can access your bank account anywhere in the world, he said. Two of the products are the Debit card and the Visa Master Card.
The cards are hot cakes in the market and are good for both corporate and individual customers, he stressed. The cards could be used to pay university fees and shop online. They could be used 24/7 from the bank’s Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and at various Points of Sale terminals (POS). There are POS outlets at Country Lodge, Swit Salone, Monoprix Supermarket and many other places in the country, he said.
A customer does not require a traditional bank account to get a VISA card, the MD stressed. He noted that UBA has just launched a product in Nigeria through which customers can receive money through their usual Yahoo and Gmail email accounts. A UBA customer can do cashless transactions at major supermarkets in Freetown with their UBA Visa cards.
Other products for corporate clients are U-Direct Corporate Solution and U bills Collection platform.
The U bills Collection platform works for corporate with a website. This platform is good for corporate customers like DSTV, Mercury or NPA for the collection of bills.
The exchange rate using the Visa Card is better than walking to the counter to do transaction, he said. The bank is working on extending to Bo. The bank started operation in Sierra Leone in 2008 but it has been in operation for over 60 years. It was the second most profitable bank in 2014.
