The University of Sierra Leone yesterday awarded plaques to distinguished students in their various field of study.
The ceremony took place at the university house committee room. This was as a result of the late arrival of the plaques, as they were not received before the scheduled date of the dinner.
Some of the sponsors of the awards are: African Minerals which is a major sponsor, Guaranty Trust Bank, Law School, Transnational Sierra Leone limited, Rokel commercial bank, National Petrol, Standard Chartered Bank, Aureol Insurance company, Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Council, Independent Media Commission, Ecobank, Sierra Leone Commercial Bank among others.
In his welcome statement, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Mrs. Bernadette Cole said that at the university banquet which was witnessed by sponsors, family and friends of awardees and staff, the plaques bearing inscription in gold of the names of the awardees and details of the awards were not distributed, due to constraints and late release of final year results and the holding of the award banquet.
She went further to say that the ceremony was organized by the awards committee to give the awardees, the opportunity to be recognized once again, as they receive their plaques by the academic and administrative Head of the university who is the Vice Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Jonas Redwood Sawyerr in full view of other members of staff.
She added that plaques are very important and also congratulated the awardees and staff for making the university proud, while wishing them continuous success in their endeavours.
In his statement, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Prof. Jonas Redwood Sawyerr said that there was a formal ceremony in which these students were recognized in public. “Normally we put in for the plaques and this is usually done in the United States but some logistical problem was encountered along the line, as they wanted to send the plaques to the students but they considered that this will not augur well. So, that is the reason why they organized this programme for them in order to celebrate excellence and why hard work pays.
He once again congratulated the students and said that he hoped that they will be proud ambassadors of their various institutions.
He hoped that these plaques will occupy a place of pride in their homes and hope they will excel in their various field of work.
The plaques were then distributed to the students.
