The head teacher of Thomas Peters Municipal School, Mrs. Shuaibatu Sharpe has revealed to Awoko that most of the pupils skip school on Fridays to help their parents beg throughout the streets of Freetown.
She revealed that the school is having 222 pupils, also noting that most of the pupils’ parents cannot afford to take care of their kids’ academic needs.
Madam Sharpe further explained that on Fridays the school is virtually empty, as most of the pupils go out to assist their parents to beg “some of them would be pushing the wheel chairs of their parents while they beg,” she said.
She explained that government has delivered most of the post Ebola promises made to assist the school, noting that notwithstanding government’s assistants more needs to be done to help these pupils.
The head teacher also acknowledged that some Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) from time to time come to the rescue of some of these pupils.
Further emphasizing that some of these pupils who are in dire need of support are very brilliant and demonstrate the zest to learn.
“We had one who was about to take the National Primary School Certificate Examination (NPSCE) but her parent couldn’t afford even decent uniform for the kid. Her parents sell kola nut they couldn’t afford it so we had to intervene and ensure that the kid took the exams,” she said.
The head teacher also spoke of 2 pupils who had been toping their class since class one but lacks support.
