As we all know, Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
According to the report of World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2015, 91 countries had ongoing malaria transmission. The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2015, the region was home to 90% of malaria cases and 92% of malaria deaths.
However, Malaria is preventable and curable, and increased efforts are dramatically reducing the malaria burden in many places, just like the effort of Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital, it is gradually becoming a treating center of malaria.
“Malaria is an acute febrile illness. In a non-immune individual, symptoms usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite. The first symptom – fever, headache, and chills may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. If not treated within 24 hours, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness, often leading to death.”
Dr Yang said children with severe malaria frequently develop one or more of the following symptoms: severe anemia, respiratory distress in relation to metabolic acidosis, or cerebral malaria. In adults, multi-organ involvement is also frequent. In malaria endemic areas, people may develop partial immunity, allowing a symptomatic infection to occur.
Dr Eric(Yang Yaoyong)from Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital reminds all that if anyone who is suspected of malaria, he or she is welcome to the friendship hospital in Jui. The Chinese specialists will try their best to treat you.
He said since his arrival he has treated hundreds of Malaria patients and he will continue to do it as he believes that it is when someone is healthy that he can move around to find something positive to do.
Dr Eric said the current malaria medicine was discovered by a Chinese in which she won the Noble peace prize. He said they will work relentlessly to treat people with Malaria and make sure Sierra Leone is a healthy nation.
