There is an important structure in the middle of the eye called crystalline lens, which is a clear part of the eye. The lens work much like a camera lens, focusing light or an image on the light-sensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye (the retina), and it must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. Any clouding of the lens is called cataract which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataract is a very common disease and it’s the main cause of visual impairment worldwide. The primary cause of Cataract is aging, most people over the age of 60 or older has some degree of visual impairment caused by cataract. But it can also be caused by trauma or radiation exposure, or be present from birth, or occur following eye surgery for other problems. Cataract often develops slowly, but it will be accelerated by some risk factors including diabetes, smoking, prolonged exposure to sunlight. Symptoms of cataract are faded colors, blurry vision, halos around light, trouble with bright lights, and difficulty in night seeing. These symptoms may result in trouble driving, reading, and recognizing faces. Poor vision caused by cataract may also result in an increase risk of falling and depression. The Prevention of cataract is simply and easy, just try to wear sunglasses when outside, quit smoking and have a healthy diet. The early stage of cataract may be improved with glasses, brighter lighting, or magnifying lenses. Surgery will always be recommended when vision loss interferes with your daily activities, such as driving, reading or watching TV. Modern cataract surgery, known as phacoemulsification, involves removing the cloudy lens and inserting an artificial lens through a very small incision. Phacoemulsification is a much safer and more efficient way than prior one. Most patients will have good visual recovery after the surgery. What’s more, There is good news for every sierra Leonean, the ophthalmologic specialist team will be back soon to do more free cataract operations, consultation and provide medicines. Just keep watching the latest news of China Medical Team and from our Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital. From Dr. Xie Weibin of the 19th batch of CMT Friday November 24, 2017.
