Hundreds of residents in Kenema on Monday morning 29th July 2013 rushed to a place called ‘Guinea base’ at Reservation to view the corpse of a man who was electrocuted in the process of stealing aluminium cables being used by the Bo/Kenema Power Services (BKPS) to provide electricity to houses.
The man was found dead near an electric pole with the aluminum conductor cable under his shoulder, with a plyer, slippers and three bundles of the aluminium conductor cables lying by him, with his head bowed down.
The man was later identified by some onlookers as one ‘Foday’ alias ‘Soja’.
They described him as a hard working man within the area who usually offer his services for payment, by cleaning compounds, breaking stones and menial jobs.
The Kenema District Crop Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) Jane Fea Kabba-Sei who leaves close to the aluminium conductor cables which were stolen explained that together with her family, they are constantly being harassed by thieves in the area.
She said a week after she occupied the quarter, thieves came to the compound and broke the glass windows and stole one IPod, camera, money and other valuables worth millions of Leones and the matter is now with the police.
She explained that last Saturday, thieves came with a black benz car without number plate and some motor bikes. They spent over thirty minutes at the car-wash site close to her quarter, around 2am. She says whenever it is raining, they do not sleep, as the thieves will come and sometimes even exchange words with them.
Speaking to an inmate Kai Kabba-Sei explained that it was around 3am that night when their dogs were heard barking, and later heard someone calling his colleagues for help.
He says in the morning they were informed by a bike rider that there was a corpse lying by their house. We informed the police and our relatives in the city. The thieves had brought some roast chickens for the dogs but they did not eat them and we saw them around the house.
