Ibrahim Sorie Conteh, a 30-year old businessman, allegedly attempted to smuggle 96 bags of frozen fish to neighbouring Guinea, on 30 March 2017 between Mana and Tambaya Village in Kambia District in the Northern part of Sierra Leone. He is charged contrary to the Customs Act and the Business Registration Act.
He appeared before Magistrate Binneh Kamara, at the Siaka Stevens Street, Magistrate Court, in Freetown, on Tuesday 23 May to answer to four charges: Conspiracy, Attempted Smuggling, Attempted Evasion of Tax Duty and Operating Unregistered and Unlicensed Business.
At the Magistrate Court on Tuesday, Police Investigator, Mohamed Alie Sillah said, “We used the by-pass towards Samu chiefdom in Kambia. We went through Tambaya; there we met a red, commercial, mini-bus (poda-poda)”. Sillah said when he examined the bus he discovered the bags of frozen fish.
Sillah said one of the suspects ran away. He said the accused admitted that he was the owner of the fish. He added that they handed over the fish to the National Revenue Authority office in Kambia. The matter was adjourned to Friday 26 May.
