“The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is an African designed, owned and driven governance monitoring programme of the African Union established on 9th March 2003. The goal was to encourage member states to adopt, foster and implement good governance processes and practices with a view to identify challenges and proffering appropriate recommendation for good governance policies, principle and practices”. Sierra Leone became a member of the APRM in 2004 and in 2012 underwent its first generation review. The Executive Chair of the APRM National Governing Council, Professor Osman Gbla said last Friday, that Sierra Leone has now been qualified for a second generation APRM review.
According to Gbla, the country was highly commended for the bold step to present itself for a review in 2012 since it was an election year.
After the first review, countries are expected to present four to six progress reports before it could be reviewed again. Gbla noted further that the country presented it’s first and second progress report in 2015 during the ebola outbreak and “the APRM 3rd and 4th Progress Reports have been validated and are expected to be presented by his Excellency the President”. According to Gbla, it is as a result of these strides that the country has been qualified to be reviewed again adding that they are expecting an APRM Continental Support Mission in January 2018 that will be led by an APRM Eminent Person.
“The development would give the country another laudable APRM stride in the continent as Kenya is the only country that has completed a second review thus preparing the way for a possible consideration of the country for a Mo-Ibrahim Governance Award”.
