In supporting the President and government strides in combating the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, Sierratel on Monday 14th July, 2014 donated the sum of two hundred million Leones as their contribution in the fight against Ebola. The presentation was made to His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma at state house. As part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility, Sierratel saw it as befitting to support Sierra Leoneans in the fight against the deadly Ebola pandemic. This is a gesture that should be greatly applauded as no other national parastatal has donated such a huge sum in the fight against the Ebola disease since its outbreak in Sierra Leone. Presenting the cheque on behalf of the Board and management of Sierratel, the chair person of Sierratel, Mrs Alice Onomake revealed that Sierratel is a government company, that is operated and owned by the people of Sierra Leone and as such “the company exist for the people of this country” she noted.
She commented that the company stands by government in its effort to control the spread of the disease that poses a serious threat to the people of Sierra Leone. The challenge, she noted, should not be left with government alone as it is but necessary that all come together to provide support so as to mitigate the spread of the disease.
In this respect, Madam Onomake reiterated that “We seek the interest of the people of Sierra Leone and whatever affects the people of sierra Leone affects the company” She stated. In this regard “we are here to support the fight against this deadly virus with the sum of two hundred million Leones which we know is not enough but we give this as a show of solidarity to what your government has been doing ever since the outbreak of this deadly virus” she expressed to the President. The Chairperson also informed the President among other things that the company is ready to support the government in many other ways in the fight against the Ebola disease as the “burden is not for you to bear alone” Madam Onomake revealed to the First Gentleman
Receiving the Cheque, President Ernest Bai Koroma thanked the Sierratel Board and Management for their timely intervention in the fight against the Ebola disease. The President alerted that “the Ebola virus is deadly and it’s serious, if we don’t join to fight it, it will have gross health, social and economic effect on the country”. The President also noted that” a disease that affects Sierra Leone in this manner should be of interest to every Sierra Leone and we must all have hands on deck to ensure that we put this behind our back”.
As part of his commendation, the President stated that I believe Sierratel has responded to my appeal to fight against Ebola and I encourage other institutions to join in the fight against the deadly virus.
In thanking the delegation which also included the Managing Director, Mr. Adel Taher and a cross section of Board and Management of Sierratel, President Koroma expressed government’s appreciation for sierratel’s response in the fight against Ebola. He promised to deliver the cheque to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for its intended purpose. President Koroma further assured the delegation that the donation was for a worthy cause and is an overwhelming gesture to the people of Sierra Leone.
It should be mentioned though that this is not the first time that Sierratel has resonated with Sierra Leoneans in addressing emergencies. In fighting the last cholera outbreak in Sierra Leone, Sierratel supported the Kroo Bay Community by donating millions of Leones and cleaning materials in order to alleviate the epidemic in the Community.
On a business note and in line with the company’s rebranding strides, Sierratel has seemingly dominated the data/ internet market with their innovative offerings tailored to meet the needs and requirements of every segment (corporate, SME and Mid to High end consumers).
