Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) is concerned and regrets the misrepresented publication in a local newspaper of 18, 19, 23 and 24 October 2017 during this period of high humanitarian need in Sierra Leone when the Society is fully engaged with partners to provide valuable services and aid to victims of the recent landslide and floods of Freetown.
The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society is a national institution set up in 1962 to serve as an auxiliary in the area of humanitarian intervention. It has been performing its statutory obligations since its inception and of recent times with distinction, which has earned it at least two international awards of excellence.
The Sierra Leone Red Cross is governed by a National Governing Board made up eleven members spread through the country.
The National Governing Board is astounded at the newspaper publications containing allegations and carrying photographs of its members. The National Governing Board believes that Sierra Leone is a peaceful loving nation having all the important structures for redressing grievances and that these structures are available to peace loving Sierra Leoneans. The National Board is of the opinion that these institutions have the integrity and verve to serve all who would require their services.
The National Governing Board is of the fervent opinion that these publications have the potential to breed animosity within the rank and file of the volunteers whose cohesive services are needed during crises. The National Governing Board would like the entire public to know that we have full confidence in the Secretary General, Constant Kargbo.
SLRCS remains accountable to its stakeholders and donors for maintaining the standards and quality of its services as well as the effective and efficient use of resources and for taking action to address any shortcomings in compliance with our policy on integrity and the seven fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement.
As part of its involvement over the years in emergency response operations, including the Ebola outbreak emergency response and recovery operations from 2014 to 2016 and the recent Landslide and Floods of August 14 2017, SLRCS with support of its partners continues to provide valuable humanitarian assistance to victims of such challenging situations in a very transparent and accountable manner and will continue those relevant humanitarian services to ease the suffering of ordinary Sierra Leone.
The Governing Board earnestly requests all who are in doubt or have misgivings concerning the operations of the Red Cross to call at the communications department of the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society for cogent insight into subject of their enquiry or call +23276624511 or email
