Sierra Leone News: Sierra Leone may recruit Bangladeshi mathematics, science teachers
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ebun Strasser-King, says the country is in dire need of teachers especially to teach mathematics and sciences, whom they would like to recruit from Bangladesh. She made this statement when she met with Banglaeshi Foreign Affairs Minister, Abdul Hassan Mahmoud Ali last week in Kuwait. She said Bangladesh peacekeepers were part of UN Peacekeeping team in Sierra Leone and they played a crucial role in establishing peace in the country. The deputy minister said they would soon formally approach the Bangladesh government. Sierra Leone emerged from a decade of civil war in 2002, with the help of a large UN peacekeeping mission. Strasser-King gratefully recalled the Bangladeshi peacekeepers’ positive contribution. She said her government would soon send a formal invitation to a group of former peacekeepers of Bangladesh to visit her country. Responding, Bangladeshi foreign minister expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to assist Sierra Leone in all aspects. He also mentioned that Bangladesh was also considering opening a full diplomatic mission in Sierra Leone. Both ministers agreed that the move would further consolidate the bilateral relation. In a telephone conversation with Education Minister Minkailu Bah, he says that he is yet to be briefed about the development. He also said that he was on his way to the provinces and on return he will check the information. The Minister also warned headteachers who are have been asking parents to pay for the NPSE exams as Government has said it is free. “People are just being wicked because these headmasters know that the exams are free. They use excuses such as passport photos and photocopy but all these are cheap excuses. Passport picture is cheap so why charge parents Le75,000 while the exams is only Le60,000 and Government is paying, so we shall deal with them,” he said. Monday June 01, 2015
