Sierra Leone News: School supplies for landslide and flood victims

A humanitarian NGO, the Australian International Aid, has supported 300 children in the flood communities with educational materials and Le100,000 cash to assist with lunches and transportation. The presentation ceremony at Kaningo and Mortomeh communities drew approximately 300 school-going children in primary and secondary schools and their parents. Aminata Ganda is a single mother with three children at Kaningo said after the floods that displaced her entire family they have been receiving support but not on education. Aminata said since they were registered after the flood no government educational supports had reached them making their situation worse. The program manager for Australian International Aid, Noah Deen Savage, said when the floods occurred in Freetown members of the Sierra Leonean community in Australian and the Amir Sultan Mosque located in Dandenong in Melbourne, offered prayers for victims and survivors. He said the donations were in cash so they decided to buy educational materials and provide some cash, which will be used by parents. Mahawa Kallon at Mortomeh said having realized the importance of education she decided to rent closer to her community so that her children will be educated. She alleged that there are ongoing selective education supports from the government through the Ministry but they are yet to receive any supplies even when they were registered.
