The Rotary Club of Freetown has on Saturday, 19th January 2019, donated a 40ft container of medical equipment and supplies to the Brenda Medical Centre in Makeni. A team of eleven Rotarians headed by the President, Rtn Lara Taylor-Pearce travelled to Makeni to do the hand over. The donation is a project of the Rotary Club of Freetown, Rotary World Help, Canada and the Strathcona Sunrise Rotary Club of Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada. In presenting the consignment, Taylor-Pearce thanked members of the Rotary Clubs for their support and the management of the Brenda Medical Centre for improving access to healthcare for the people of Makeni. According to Taylor-Pearce, “The donation will help in providing much needed equipment and furniture to the new Centre.” She urged the management of the Centre to keep the facility clean and to ensure that quality service is provided to patients at all times. The donation was received by Brimah Samura, on behalf of the Board and management of the Brenda Medical Centre. The Centre is a new health facility, located in the Teko area of Makeni. The eye care component is now open. Work on the 40-bed hospital is on going and will hopefully start operations in the next few months. The Rotary team also visited the Masorie garri processing factory in Bombali District. The visit was geared to ensure the Rotary project is implemented as planned and that the beneficiaries fully understand the project objectives. This   project seeks to provide livelihood support to farmers, especially women. As part of the working visit, the team embarked on a conducted tour at the factory and had lengthy discussions with Lansana Sesay from Hope International. Similarly, the team also had meetings with the three groups that have been trained and registered as cooperatives. These three cooperative groups; Sadentry Cooperative with 25 active members; Ropothur Cooperative with 15 members and Masorie Cooperative with 20 members are established, trained and registered with the Ministry of Agriculture. The cooperative groups have also opened their bank accounts and are operational.
