Sierra Leone News: Robbery trial continues after 9-month adjournment
After spending nine months in custody, since October 2016, Babatunde Eric Lewis appeared for the continuation of his trial before Justice Monfred Sesay at the Siaka Stevens Street High Court in Freetown on Wednesday 21 June 2017. It is alleged that the accused robbed the complainant, Martha Forster, by stealing her bag in April 2014. Lewis is charged with Robbery contrary to the Larceny Act of 1916. On his appearance before the judge, he acted reluctantly and seemed angry that he was brought for trial. The long adjournment of his matter became a concern to the presiding judge who ordered during his court sitting on Tuesday that the matter is heard on Wednesday morning. The judge advised the accused to behave well so that the Court will try him speedily. Meanwhile, State Counsel, J.A.K. Sesay, led three witnesses in evidence and promised to bring his final witness on the next adjourned date. Furthermore, since the prosecution could no longer trace the victim and her witness, the Court has adopted their testimonies at the Magistrate Court for the purpose of speedy trial. The matter was adjourned to Thursday 29 June while the accused remain on remand at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown. ES/21/6/17 By Edna Smalle Thursday June 22, 2017.
