As a way to improve access to accurate and timely health data and information, Options, in collaboration with other development partners, on Tuesday 23 May embarked on strategies on improving health data and information in Sierra Leone.
Marleen Vellekoop, team leader, Options, noted that improvements in Sierra Leone health data are essential to inform evidence-based actions to deliver better services for women, adolescents and children.
“This information is vital for effective resource planning and for monitoring national health care delivery patterns and outcomes,” Vellekoop stated.
Vellekoop further added that accurate data is vital to rapid respond to public health emergencies stating that Health Management Information System could provide up-to-date reliable information on routine health indicators such as number of women delivering in facilities, children that have been fully vaccinated, antenatal check-ups.
“Sierra Leone is now swiftly moving towards full access to real time data and there are no delays in receiving health data.” Velleloop said.
Dr. Santigie Sesay, Head of Reproductive Health, Ministry of Health, said, “The process of rebuilding the health system and making the necessary investments to improving the health outcomes of the people of Sierra Leone has begun. Investment at all levels will be required in the short, medium, and long term.”
