Sierra Leone News: Punjab gives educational support to communities in Kenema

As part of fulfilling their Corporate Social Responsibility to communities in Kenema district, Punjab Trading Centre of 108 Hangha Road in Kenema has donated 60 benches and desks to four primary schools in Kenema city.
Among the schools that benefited were UMC Primary School in Burma, Provincial Primary school, Methodist Primary School and Charitable Primary School.
The donation ceremony took place at the Kenema City Council (KCC) hall along Reservation Road in Kenema.
The Chairperson of the programme, Councillor Mohamed Sam described Punjab as the only company in the eastern region that is largely responding to its corporate responsibility thereby making its presence recognize by all and sundry.
Councillor Mohamed Sam disclosed that many people living in the area where Punjab operates has been complaining about air pollution, among others, and that they were not benefiting from the company.
He noted that over the years the company has been rendering support to the community and the city as a whole before calling on them to give more support and help to the community.
In his contribution, the civil society representative, Mohamed Morie said as civil society activists they have been monitoring the operations of Punjab in that part of the country.
He said the company’s activities alleged to be hazard to the community have been drastically minimized, noting that as civil society they will continue to monitor Punjab through the new manager.
The Deputy Mayor, Kenema City Council, Esther Nguanya Kaisamba congratulated the new manager and assured council’s support and therefore appealed to Punjab Trading Company to give support to the on going construction of 2,500 Seater pavilion for Kenema city.
The representative of the Teachers, Michael Juanah of Charitable Community Primary School commended Punjab for it numerous assistance to the community, pointing fingers at the culvert linking the Niawama communities to the Methodist community.
Delivering her statement, the Manager of Punjab Trading Centre, Victoria Bernard said they are currently presenting schools materials to four schools in the environment where the company operates, adding that contributing to education is one of their corporate social responsibilities to the community as a way of ensuring quality education for all.
