The Human Rights Commission has called on the Government to rely on a human rights based approach in all interventions in holding centres as well as the proposed resettlement of affected persons of the mudslide and flooding.
In a press release, signed by the Chairman of the Commission Usman Jess Fornah, said they have observed some human rights concerns during its monitoring of the interim holding centres and these include; poor sanitation and hygiene conditions, lack of privacy, overcrowding, bedding constraints, poor dietary standards and improper and unverified registration of unaffected persons.
The Commission made reference to various legal frameworks and international treaties that the government has signed. These relate to the resettlement of displaced and affected persons. The Commission calls on the government to ensure that the proposed resettlement of affected victims to the designated areas takes into cognisance; the rights to information and participation of affected persons in decision making to resettlement areas, rights to food, clean and safe drinking water, rights to adequate standard of living, rights to property, rights to education and healthcare and rights to be in a safe and secured environment.
