Sierra Leone News: President Koroma appeals for help after visiting disaster site
President Ernest Bai Koroma, and an entourage of government people, visited the site of the mudslide disaster on 14 August 2017 and appealed for help for the victims of the mudslide and floods. The President expressed shock over the level of destruction. Large houses and panbody shacks were destroyed and buried in mud. Excavators and volunteers were busy trying to recover bodies of missing relatives and victims of the flood. The President appealed to victims to remain calm. He said four registration centres were established to register victims. A survivor of the disaster at Regent, Mohamed Kamara, expressed dismay over the slow response. He said since Monday, no government or NGO has provided us with food, clothing except for some our neighbours who allowed us to sleep on verandahs. According to the Deputy Minister of Information, Cornelious Deveaux, the President is expected to declare a national mourning day for the vicitims of the disaster.
