In its continued effort to promote equal representation and to prepare more women to participate in the 2018 March election, the 50/50 Group on Monday 27 November 2017, embarked on training women across the country on political and leadership skills.
Giving an overview of the training at the 50/50 Group head office at Tower Hill, Fatu Taqi, President, 50/50 Group, noted that the training is geared towards equipping women with skills to develop themselves more positively, build their confidence, change attitudes, identify their hidden skills and potentials to actively participate in governance and leadership space in Sierra Leone.
Taqi spoke on the need to enhance women’s political and socio-economic empowerment and participation in governance.
Constituting about 52% of the population of Sierra Leone, Taqi said, the active participation of women in decision–making in every sphere of life is essential.
Taqi pointed out low level of awareness coupled with the low educational attainment as some of the keys for low representation of women in public life adding that the leadership and political training will help women to effectively and efficiently contribute in national development.
Tude Smith, programme manager, 50/50 explained about the organisation’s support for more women in political space, 50/50 roles in district mobilisation of women in voter registration, training of female aspirants, informal women’s groups and persons with disabilities across the country.
Smith furthered on international concern for women pointing out the need to protect and advance the rights of women as a way to push for women’s empowerment and development.
The training, he added, will highlight barriers that prevent women from fully participating in governance and provide strategies for breaking the barriers, provide strategies for lobbying and campaigning to reach targeted audience.
