Sierra Leone News: People in Bo & Kenema bewildered by witchcraft
Thousands of people in Bo and Kenema districts including security personnel and stakeholders on Sunday, 12th April 2015 moved to Jembe town on the Kenema-Bo highway watch what many believed was the handiwork of witchcraft as a man was seen on top of a very tall cotton tree apparently trapped.Mustapha Nabieu of Jembe town alerted people including security personnel and stakeholders when he saw a man on the top of the cotton tree near Jembe unable to climb down.Surprised by the information, thousands of people from Bo and Kenema converged around the tree in an attempt to rescue the trapped man. Some attributed the presence of the man on the tree to witchcraft that he may have been a victim of a witch plane crash the previous night. The trapped man, who looked like a Fullani, could not afford to jump from the height he was on the tree. Eyewitnesses conjectured that he may have failed to perform certain obligations to his godfathers, which was why he was trapped on the tree as a form of punishment.A traditional herbalist, who identified himself as Abdul Masarmu told the bewildered crowd that he has the power to cause the descend of the man. He was given Le 10, 000 as traditional fee and he went into a nearby bush to perform what he said was his power.True to his words, an hour later, the trapped man was seen dropping in a guided fashion from the tree until he fell down. Mohamed Jalloh who was unable to talk when he fell was rushed to the nearby Peripheral Health Unit (PHU) at Jembe. The Chief Health Officer at the PHU, told reporters that on examination of the man, he notices no external injuries, but noted that he could be bleeding internally. The Chiefdom Speaker, Foday Kabba described the incident as “mysterious” and that it was the first time such an incident happened in their chiefdom. At the time of going to press, Mohamed Jalloh was still alive but speechless.By Saffa MoribaFriday April 17, 2015
