Through their usual monthly contributions and micro credit scheme, Peace Mothers in the Fakoi Section of Fakunya Chiefdom in Moyamba District have unanimously agreed to generate over Le10, 000, 000 (ten million Leones) to develop a gari processing facility.
This decision was reached at their monthly meeting held in Baoma Johnson village. According to the Chairlady, Battu Robert, they intend use the facility to produce large quantities of gari, fufu and other food stuffs that would be sold to women in needy communities at low cost.
“Presently we have collected Le2million through a Loan Scheme and we are going to give out loans to our members with minimal interest to be paid at the end of every month,” Madam Battu disclosed.
She went on to state that there are over 60 members in the group from surrounding villages adding that each member pays Le5,000 as monthly contribution.
“Our target is to generate Le10m or more and we intend working very hard to achieve this goal. There is a saying that if you empower a woman you have empowered the whole community; this is why we are working very hard with our own little resources to develop ourselves,” the Chairlady affirmed.
Last year Peace Mothers in Fakoi harvested over 20 bags of husk rice from their inland valley swamp. During their just concluded monthly meeting, they agreed to cultivate more acres of inland valley swamp rice and to embark on gari processing project.
