One-time Organising Secretary and Minister during the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), Okere Adams has applied for membership to join the All Peoples Congress Party (APC).
In an interview with the APC Secretary General, Ambassador Osman Yansanneh, he said he got a telephone call from his office while he was at State House, that one Okere Adams is waiting for him in his office. He added that he spoke with Okere and he told him he wanted to join the party and that he has a letter to that effect.
Ambassador Yansanneh said, the letter Okere sent to the party was also copied to the Chairmen and Secretary-Generals of the two parties, (SLPP & APC) that he had decided to quit the SLPP because he was subjected to abuse and molestation from some members of the SLPP.
The letter dated 14th July, states, “Mr. Secretary-General I would like to be involved in the furtherance of the good work of the APC party”.
The Secretary-General reiterated that the letter addressed to him, is an application for general membership from Okere asking the party to register him.
Further quoting details in the letter, Ambassador Yansanneh said he (Okere) has been a lifelong member of the SLPP and had served as Organising Secretary on two consecutive terms and also served as Minister in different capacities.
He said that Okere in his letter, stated that he has gone through harassment and imprisonment of his parents and himself in the 1970s by SLPP and further states his parents will be glad of the move he has made.
Ambassador Yansanneh stated that in the letter, Okere said, he has served the SLPP actively when the party was in power and in moribund.
He said included in the letter was that Okere for the past two years, distanced himself from the SLPP party, due to the torrent of molestation and abuses from certain party members.
Responding to what is in the letter, he said “ I know for sure that we in the APC have decided not to accommodate big fishes from other parties because of democracy”. But says, his party will go through the decision of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) look at the application of Okere before making their final decision; if he meets all the requirements to become a member.
He says from the letter, it seems as if the Former Minister has been chased and forced by the SLPP to join the APC.
The Secretary-General said he has advised Okere to send in his letter of resignation to the APC, and then copy the SLPP, National Electoral Commission and the Political Party Registration Commission.
He concluded “we have no intention to drown the SLPP….we are encouraging the SLPP to stay intact”
